The swimming marathon from Albania to Corfu, organized by the IPA Cross-border Cooperation Programme “Greece-Albania 2014-2020” ion the framework of European Cooperation Day 2012, has been selected as a good practice in terms of communication and will be presented at the kick-off event of EC Day 2014 in Milan under the auspices of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

On September 22nd 2012 more than 35 amateur athletes from the two countries swan from Xamil in Albania to Agios Stefanos Sinion in Corfu in an event that was broadly publicised, as it was the first time a marathon like that was organized. In close cooperation and under the supervision of the local, port and police authorities of Greece and Albania more than 80 people moved safely from country to country without any border, passport or custom controls (Albania is not a member of the Schengen area), something that highlights the event’s importance and great success.

European Cooperation day is an initiative of the INTERACT network Programme, in which all EU members-state participate, aiming to highlight the role of cooperation across borders in the European Union and with its neighbours –a celebration of all the benefits European Territorial Cooperation brings to people across Europe. Each year more than 70 European Territorial Cooperation participate, organising more than 250 events in total.
