DIGITAL stretegic project kick-off meeting

The DIGITAL project commenced its implementation phase through a partners kick-off meeting at DIADYMA’s headquarters at Kozani (Western Macedonia – Greece) on 16 and 17 October. The partnership consortium sonsists of the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy as lead partner, DIADYMA S.A.-  Waste Management of Western Macedona, the Regional Management Organisation for Solid Waste of Ionian Islands S.A., the Negotiative Association for Solid Waste Management of Epirus, the Regional Council of Berat and the Municipality of Himara, combining expertise and human capital from both countries of Greece and Albania.

As a strategic project under Priority 1 for a greener and more resilient cross-border region, DIGITAL leverages a budget of 2.494.610,11 EUR with 1.995.687,72 provided by EU funds and  498.922,39 EUR from national contributions. Its main objective is to drive the transition to a circular and resource-efficient economy through concrete pilot interventions. Across selected municipalities and regions —Eordaia, Ioannina, Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands in Greece / Berat and Himara in Albania— DIGITAL will install smart bins, magnetic card systems, precision weighing solutions and autonomous photovoltaic waste-monitoring systems, all fully integrated within a digital platform.

By rolling out the Earn As You Throw (EAYT) model cross-border, the project aims to boost recycling, slash landfill rates, engage citizens and enhance transparency in waste data management. More than 290.000 residents will benefit, while local authorities and civil society organizations will gain a stronger capacity to implement robust waste strategies and circular economy measures. DIGITAL sets a new benchmark for collaborative, measurable impact and demonstrates the power of joint innovation to shape a sustainable future for the Greece-Albania region.
