Kick-Off Meeting for EXTROVERT ROADS 2.0: Advancing Cross-Border Connectivity and Sustainable Mobility
11:00 to 15:00
03/03/2026
On 3 March 2026, the official kick-off meeting for the EXTROVERT ROADS 2.0 project was held at the Municipal Council Hall of the Municipality of Georgios Karaiskakis in Ano Kalentini. Representatives from the Municipality of Dropull (lead partner), the Municipality of Georgios Karaiskakis and the Municipality of Kentrika Tzoumerka, along with MA/JS representatives gathered to formalise the operational rollout of this €1,49 million cross-border initiative.
Building on a Legacy of Cooperation
EXTROVERT ROADS 2.0 is the direct continuation and expansion of a highly successful long-term partnership. During the 2014-2020 programming period, the original EXTROVERT ROADS project effectively modernised 5,53 km of municipal roads, proving the transformative potential of cross-border collaboration. Today’s meeting focused on capitalising on that acquired knowledge and mutual trust to tackle new challenges with an expanded consortium.
Strategic Focus of the Kick-Off
Rather than just a ceremonial launch, today’s meeting served as a vital strategic alignment for the partners. Discussions centered on the practical execution of the project’s core objectives:
-
Infrastructure Execution: Coordinating the timeline and procurement strategies for the upgrade of 8,48 km of municipal road networks across the three participating regions.
-
Integrating Innovation: Outlining the pilot deployment of new self-illuminating, zero-energy road marking solutions designed to dramatically improve safety in remote, mountainous areas.
-
Digital Transformation: Establishing the development and testing phases for the XT-ROADS tool, an innovative digital platform that will allow public authorities to conduct Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and monitor the environmental footprint of road construction.
Driving Community Connectivity At its core, the agenda of EXTROVERT ROADS 2.0 is driven by the need to co-create extrovert development pathways for disadvantaged and geographically isolated areas. By improving accessibility, the partners aim to achieve significant time savings —estimated at over 120 equivalent man-days per year. This enhanced mobility is crucial for the local community; it means faster access to health and public services, a reduction in transportation costs for local businesses and a stronger foundation for sustainable regional economic growth.
By concluding today’s structural and operational planning, the consortium is fully prepared to turn these strategic goals into tangible realities for the cross-border region.
